Los Angeles Plan To Reduce Serious Traffic Crashes

Los Angeles Plan To Reduce Serious Traffic Crashes

By Anthony Alaniz

Los Angeles police presented a plan before the L.A. Police Commission in hopes of reducing the number of fatal and serious injury traffic collisions in the city by 10 percent this year.

“I think anything is attainable,” Tyler Izen, L.A. police union president, said in an interview with Southern California Public Radio. “It might require much more than the Los Angeles Police Department. It might require every citizen out there. It might require all of us to give up our phones while we’re in the car.”

Already, about 110 officers have been asked to voluntarily move to traffic enforcement assignments at one of the department’s four bureaus across the city in an effort to help reduce those types of crashes.

“The bottom line is this: When I lose friends who are police officers or family members – when I lose them to traffic collisions – it is no less a loss than when I lose them to violence,” Izen said in an interview with Southern California Public Radio.

Naked Man Stops LA Traffic After Climbing On Roof Of Tesla

Naked Man Stops LA Traffic After Climbing On Roof Of Tesla

By Anthony Alaniz

A naked man stopped Los Angeles traffic Tuesday by ripping off his clothes and dancing on his car’s roof. In a video uploaded to YouTube, firefighters are seen trying to coax the man down. According to Teddy Bliss, who identified himself as the video’s cameraman, said the video he filmed was just a small portion of the chaos that ensued.

“This all started when the guy driving the Tesla stopped in the middle of the PCH and jumped out of the car! Running around waving a shirt, acting like something was wrong with his Tesla,” he wrote in an email to the New York Daily News.

The naked man then jumped back into his car, driving wildly through traffic before crashing into a MIni Cooper. By that point both firefighters and ambulance personnel were at the scene. Police arrived shortly thereafter and helped load the man onto a stretcher.

Capt. Scott, of Pacific Palisades FIre Station 69, said the man may have had a “meltdown or psychiatric episode or was on a controlled substance.”

The identity of the man hasn’t been released.

Smart Car The Prey In New Prank

Smart Cars The Prey In New Prank

By Anthony Alaniz

The Smart Car, the small urbanite vehicle from Daimler, has been the butt of many jokes over the years. Recently, the mild jibes of insults have transformed into full on vehicular vandalism.

A group of eight hooded vandals is apparently responsible for tipping several Smart Cars on their sides or upside down entirely. The motivation behind the vandalism is unknown.

One recent incident was witnessed by Brandon Michael, who was smoking a cigarette at the time the incident occurred. The incident happened about 12:30 a.m. Monday near Bowdoin and Sweeny.

“All of a sudden I just see eight hooded figures walk up to the car,” Michael said in an interview with KRON 4 News. “I thought it looked like they were up to no good. And then sure enough they walk up to this smart car right here, all huddle around it, and then lift it up and set it on its hind legs.”

According to the police, witnesses reported seeing similar incidents involving Smart Cars at about the same time just on the other side of I-280. One ended up on its side at Anderson and Ogden while another was left completely on its roof at Anderson and Courtland a few blocks away

Currently, the police have no suspects and are asking anyone with information to contact them.

All Cars Are Under Investigation According to LAPD

All Cars Are Under Investigation According to LAPD

By Anthony Alaniz

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, cars within Los Angeles is currently under investigation. What those cars are under investigation for is unknown. The startling stance comes as a records request from the American Civil Liberties Union and Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) about the data collected by the Automatic license plate reader (ALPR) systems, as well as the department’s policy about the storing and sharing of that data was met with a denial.

The system, which is used in cities across the country, takes photos of all license plates that come into the system’s view. The system collects the location, plate number and time.

The LAPD is arguing that while the information isn’t being used for any current investigations, it could be useful in future ones.

“All ALPR data is investigatory—regardless of whether a license plate scan results in an immediate ‘hit’ because, for instance, the vehicle may be stolen, the subject of an ‘Amber Alert,’ or operated by an individual with an outstanding arrest warrant,” according to the LAPD’s filing.

A similar system was used in Boston until an investigation and public records request showed a stolen car being scanned 60 times without arousing a police response. The program was subsequently shut down.

The LAPD is taking a bold stand against the prevailing traditions of the criminal justice system and the Fourth Amendment. The American Civil Liberties Union and EFF are appealing the filing.

Authorities detained a 21-year-old woman Thursday in connection with a shooting threat. The threat was made to LA Valley College, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said.

The woman, who was detained for several hours, was former LAVC student Sydnee Lewis. She was taken into police custody at 10:40 a.m. at her Panorama City apartment near Sylmar Avenue and Plummer Street.

Authorities handcuffed and questioned Lewis as officers searched her apartment. No weapons were found during the search. She was released four hours later. Lewis suspects another woman made the threat.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was alerted to the threat around 9:15 a.m. Deputies considered the threat credible after an anonymous call about a possible shooter heading to the school, officers said.

“We continued to investigate, as we are now. We were able to determine that there was indeed a possibility this was going to happen. We were able to detain someone and we are continuing the investigation at this time,” Lt. Melva Mitchell said in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.

The campus was evacuated as a precaution and all classes before 5 p.m. were cancelled. The case is still being investigated as investigators try to track down the person who actually made the threat.

Elderly Man Accidentally Drives Car Into Medical Office

Elderly Man Accidentally Drives Car Into Medical Office

By Anthony Alaniz

Two people were injured Tuesday after an elderly man accidently lost control of his vehicle and drove into a medical building.

The accident occurred at 10:15 a.m. at 999 North Tustin Ave., Santa Ana police officials said in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.

The unidentified 87-year-old man mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the break when he was pulling into a handicapped-parking space.

“The vehicle, a 4-door Lexus, went over the parking stop, down a small slope and collided into Diamond Medical Office,” police officials said in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.

The car took out several large glass walls and came to rest halfway inside the office according to reports.

The two injured in the incident, a doctor and female patient, suffered only minor injuries that resulted from the glass and debris, according to officials. The driver of the car was not injured. No charges have been filed at this time.

C7 Chevrolet Corvette vs. Porsche Carrera 911

C7 Chevrolet Corvette vs. Porsche Carrera 911

By Anthony Alaniz

It may seem like a moot comparison, but when a new, 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray costs as much as the options alone tacked onto a Porsche Carrera 911, answers are needed about one’s sanity if they pluck down the cash for the 911.

In the video below, drifter extraordinaire Chris Harris takes the two sports cars out onto the track at Chuckwalla to see just how close these two cars compared.

While there is a power difference between the two—400 for the Carrera, 460 for the Corvette—they do accomplish their intended goals quite differently. The Corvette is, and always will be a General Motors product. It is the sports car for the masses, offering impeccable performance at bargain basement prices. It’s what the Corvette is known for, and keeps doing it better and better year after year.

The Porsche Carrera 911 is, and always will be a Porsche product. There is a certain level of opulence and importance that comes with the car the Corvette simply cannot match. There are things the 911 does better than the Corvette can ever dream of doing, but at the end of the day, the large price disparity between the two is enough to make anyone second guess their purchasing decision.

A woman was killed last week after she was beaten outside a Santa Ana nightclub. According to authorities, Pham was attacked on the morning of Jan. 18 as she stood in line outside The Crosby Club.

When officers arrived, they found her unconscious. She died Tuesday after being taken off life support.

According to one of Pham’s friends, the confrontation may have started when Pham unintentionally stepped into another group’s photo.

“I can’t imagine it starts with someone interrupting a photo,” her father, Dung Pham, said in an interview Sunday with The Los Angeles Times. “I don’t know what to think.”

Pham graduated from Chapman University with a degree in psychology and was married a year ago this month.

Police have arrested two suspects and are looking for another person of interest in the incident.

Last week, Vanesa Tapia Zavala, a 25-year-old of Santa Ana, pleaded not guilty to murder in connection with Pham’s death. She is being held on $1-million bail.

Police have released the names of the second suspect or of the other person being sought, officials said. The incident is still under investigation.
