A woman was killed last week after she was beaten outside a Santa Ana nightclub. According to authorities, Pham was attacked on the morning of Jan. 18 as she stood in line outside The Crosby Club.

When officers arrived, they found her unconscious. She died Tuesday after being taken off life support.

According to one of Pham’s friends, the confrontation may have started when Pham unintentionally stepped into another group’s photo.

“I can’t imagine it starts with someone interrupting a photo,” her father, Dung Pham, said in an interview Sunday with The Los Angeles Times. “I don’t know what to think.”

Pham graduated from Chapman University with a degree in psychology and was married a year ago this month.

Police have arrested two suspects and are looking for another person of interest in the incident.

Last week, Vanesa Tapia Zavala, a 25-year-old of Santa Ana, pleaded not guilty to murder in connection with Pham’s death. She is being held on $1-million bail.

Police have released the names of the second suspect or of the other person being sought, officials said. The incident is still under investigation.

Toyota FT-1 Concept could signal the return of the Supra

Toyota FT-1 Concept could signal the return of the Supra

Toyota FT-1 Concept

The Toyota FT-1 Concept revealed at the 2014 North American International Auto Show could signal the return of the legendary Toyota Supra. While not many details are known about the concept, it is still an engine-less design visualization. It was designed at Toyota’s Calty design studio in Southern California in cooperation with Sony’s Polyphony Digital, makers of the Gran Turismo video-game franchise.

While rumors about the return of the Supra have been swirling since the mid-2000s, when Toyota introduced the Scion FR-S, it got many thinking that Toyota could be making a valiant push back into the sports car arena.

An interesting aspect of the FT-1 Concept is that it has likely been born out of a recent partnership with BMW that is supposed to yield a new sports car jointly designed by the two companies. It is unclear right now which company will lead the design and engineering, but even with Toyota bringing this concept to fruition and revealing at the auto show, there is hope that some sort of production vehicle based on this concept could be seen in the future.

It’s also best to remember that when Toyota was working with Subaru to bring the FR-S/BRZ to market, they released numerous concepts before the final, toned-down production version was revealed, leaving many bored with the styling.

Deceptive advertising charges filed against Los Angeles County dealerships by FTC

Los Angeles County car dealerships settle with FTC over deceptive ads

The Federal Trade Commission has charged four Los Angeles Cunty car dealerships alleging they used deceptive advertising tactics. The deceptive ads were an apparent tactic to lure customers into showrooms.

Casino Auto Sales, of La Puente, Rainbow Auto Sales, of South Gate, Honda of Hollywood, in Los Angeles, and Norm Reeves Honda in Cerritos, were among the car dealerships charged, according to the FTC.

No fines or penalties were brought against the dealerships, though a violation of the consent order will result in a $16,000 fine per violation per day, said the FTC.

Allegedly, some of the advertisements would promote low cost vehicles, but the fine print would hide hidden fees, taxes, and down payments.

“You should never have fine print disclaimers that are inconsistent with any prominent claims your making, that’s deceptive,” said Jessica Rich, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, in an interview with the Los Angeles Daily News. “It doesn’t cure a misrepresentation to have fine print disclaimers that nobody can read or understand. It’s still deceptive.”

An Advertisement from Casino Auto Sales, provided by the FTC, stated a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe LS was priced at $17,995. Buried in the fine print was a $5,000 down payment, though it was unclear if the down payment was part of the $17,995 price or an additional fee.

This is part of a larger operation by the FTC called “Operation Steer Clear.” Six other dealerships across the country have been charged.

Ford C-Max Solar Energi Concept Unveiled at 2014 CES

Ford is unveiling a new concept car at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Ford C-Max Solar Energi concept. Based off the C-Max Energi, Ford’s plug-in hybrid, the Ford C-Max Solar Energi Concept adds a solar-powered charging apparatus as its battery pack. Ford has had a present at CES over the last few years as it tries to publicize itself as both a car company and a technology company, using the event to highlight numerous technologies in the past.

Below the solar array on the roof is a standard Ford C-Max, including the 7.6-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Ford claims the C-Max Solar Energi can travel a claimed 21 miles on electricity alone.

Ford isn’t the first company to place solar panels on their car roofs. The Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf both offer solar panels as options.

What differentiates the Solar Energi from the standard model is that instead of obtaining electricity through a power cord, it uses the solar array on the roof. Ford says there is a “concentrator,” or large Fresnel lens, that can take in a constant amount of light regardless of sunlight angle and direction, and intensifies the light on the solar panels. This is in the design of a canopy that is placed over the car when it is parked.

People running off with your “concentrator,” wasn’t addressed by Ford.

However, consumers don’t have to worry if the sun isn’t out, Ford kept the charging port in place just in case.

Ford worked with Sunpower Corporation and the Georgia Institute of Technology on the panels and concentrator device. While the concept may seem novel, its feasibility is still unknown. Solar panels are still expensive and are not known for converting sunlight into electricity well.

Ford says the lens intensifies sunlight by eight times helping the car charge up 8 kW of energy.  It’s unknown whether Ford’s claim will transfer into real-world results.

Ford is considering the car for production in conjunction with the Georgia Institute of Technology, but no official decision has been made.

Electric cars may become solution for power storage

A pilot program out of the University of Delaware hopes to turn electric cars into energy-grid storage units, allowing the car owners to get paid for the electricity taken from their cars when they are plugged into the grid.

This would be a way to control the flow of electricity into the system when other forms of renewable energy sources, like wind and solar power, are sometimes unstable.

“This is a fascinating option,” said Robert Weisenmiller, chair of the California Energy Commission, in an interview with The Los Angeles Times. “The technology works. You can do this. The question is … what do we need to do to make it happen?”

One issue with the concept is convincing automakers of the potential to create a value proposition for the car owner and boost sales, said Tom Gage, chief executive of EVGrid, in an interview with The Los Angeles Times.

Automakers are not in the business of stabilizing the electric grid. There are also concerns about voiding a vehicle’s manufacturer warranty.

Another hurdle is utility regulations and the companies. Typically, utility companies invest in large-plant technologies that make money by charging the customers. There are no large storage plants to invest in with vehicle storage so they may shy away from this type of emerging technology.

“There is momentum behind this idea,” Willett Kempton said, the brainchild behind the program, in an interview with The Los Angeles Times. “These batteries are a huge resource, and we are going to need them.”

A vehicle traveling near Winter Haven, Fla. crossed the oncoming lane, crashed through a fence, went down an embankment, and landed upside down in a water-filled ditch. A driver traveling along the highway spotted the car accident around 7:45 a.m. Thursday, according to a Polk County Sheriff’s Office report.

Two men, Taylor Jeffrey Bowden, 23, and Rafael Fernandes De Aguiar Valim, 25, who was driving the vehicle, were both killed in the accident. The third man, Robert Lewis Edwards, 22, was rescued from the neck-deep water.

Bowden is the grandson of former Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden.

“Our whole family had just celebrated Christmas together in Panama City, as well as celebrated T.J.’s graduation from Florida State just three weeks ago,” Bobby Bowden said. “We will cherish those last memories together with T.J. forever.”

This is the second grandson Bobby Bowden has lost in an auto accident. Bowden Madden and John Allen Madden were killed in 2004 when the car they were in collided with a utility truck.

According to the sheriff’s office, it appears alcohol might have been a contributing factor. There were few other details so far from the investigation. The car accident remains under investigation by local officials.

A seven-vehicle crash left one dead Monday night in San Fernando Valley, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The accident happened at 11:05 p.m. in the 19200 block of Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana.

The male driver of a gray Ford Taurus, and suspected of drunk driving, was driving eastbound on Ventura when he crashed into six vehicles stopped at the intersection. He was allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed, the LAPD said.

An unidentified 60-year-old woman from Los Angeles, who was in the first car to be struck, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspected drunk driver, who is described to be in his 30s, went into a nearby convenience store, purchased a six pack of beer, and began drinking after the crash had occurred.

“He was loudly asking for the beer, ‘I need beer, beer,’” the clerk said in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.

“We’ve seen this happen in the past where somebody, because of the level of stress or whatever the situation is, they go out and consume some alcoholic beverages,” Det. Bill Bustos said in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.

Three other people suffered minor injuries. The suspect was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

The accident remains under investigation. No arrests have been made.
