Police Defend DUI of Man Who Blew 0.00 on Breathalyzer

Larry Davis was arrested Jan. 13, 2014 and charged with a DUI after he ran a stop sign and appeared to be intoxicated during a field sobriety test, according to arresting officers.

Davis said he had only one drink. After blowing 0.00 on a Breathalyzer, he offered to provide a blood sample as well. He ended up spending a day in jail according to the Austin Statesman.

The results came back negative months later. Now, Davis is trying to have his arrest record cleared. The Austin Police are defending their arrest and DUI charge against Davis.

“If there is someone who is possibly impaired, we don’t want them driving,” said Cmdr. David Mahoney, of Austin police said in an interview with The Raw Story. “We need to get them off the road, so that was probably (the officer’s) mindset.”

Davis’ case was dismissed last week. Travis County picked up his legal fees.

“I was arrested for nothing, really,” Davis said in an interview with The Raw Story. “It was suspicion of drunk driving, which I wasn’t so I was surprised and hurt at the same time.”

The Fourth of July is a holiday filled with festivities and celebrations that honor America’s independence. Though all of the events appear harmless enough – backyard BBQs, beach days, evening fireworks – many dangerous consequences arise from the merriment.

In Los Angeles County over the weekend, nearly 500 people were arrested for driving under the influence in order to prevent such disastrous outcomes. Authorities have claimed that this many people were apprehended between Thursday and 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

Local traffic enforcement operations were responsible for the 490 DUIs. In an effort to keep the streets safe from those who choose to drink heavily and drive home, many systems were put in place throughout the county that practiced zero tolerance.

According to the reports, last year during the same period, 343 arrests were made. Either more people are choosing to break law, or the police are becoming more stringent against the dangerous motorists.

Though the amount of arrests made may seem like overkill, it is for the good of Los Angeles residents. Accidents that are caused by drivers under the influence are more frequent and cause more damage than those caused by other factors.

Los Angeles can only assume that lives were saved this weekend because so many people were taken off of the roads.
