All Cars Are Under Investigation According to LAPD

By Anthony Alaniz

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, cars within Los Angeles is currently under investigation. What those cars are under investigation for is unknown. The startling stance comes as a records request from the American Civil Liberties Union and Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) about the data collected by the Automatic license plate reader (ALPR) systems, as well as the department’s policy about the storing and sharing of that data was met with a denial.

The system, which is used in cities across the country, takes photos of all license plates that come into the system’s view. The system collects the location, plate number and time.

The LAPD is arguing that while the information isn’t being used for any current investigations, it could be useful in future ones.

“All ALPR data is investigatory—regardless of whether a license plate scan results in an immediate ‘hit’ because, for instance, the vehicle may be stolen, the subject of an ‘Amber Alert,’ or operated by an individual with an outstanding arrest warrant,” according to the LAPD’s filing.

A similar system was used in Boston until an investigation and public records request showed a stolen car being scanned 60 times without arousing a police response. The program was subsequently shut down.

The LAPD is taking a bold stand against the prevailing traditions of the criminal justice system and the Fourth Amendment. The American Civil Liberties Union and EFF are appealing the filing.

Darth Vader Watches Man Smash LAPD Windows

Darth Vader Watches Man Smash LAPD Windows

By Anthony Alaniz

Only in Hollywood can you see Darth Vader helplessly watch a man vandalize four Los Angele Police Department cruisers.

A man wielding a metal rod smashed all the windows save for the windshield on the four cruisers. The incident happened near Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave. around 1 p.m., said LAPD Officer Bruce Borihanh.

A KTLA photographer who was working in the area shot video of the incident. The video shows someone dressed as Darth Vader, light saber included, watching as the man swings the rod into the window of the car behind him. Some people passing by stared as they walked past the police cruiser.

The rod-wielding man pulls a laptop from the car and takes it to a kiosk, where he opens and then walks away from the scene.

Video later shows the man on the ground and surrounded by police. Someone in a police costume was standing nearby. The man was arrested without incident, Borihanh said.

No other information about the suspect was available, he said. It was just another day good triumphed over evil.

A seven-vehicle crash left one dead Monday night in San Fernando Valley, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The accident happened at 11:05 p.m. in the 19200 block of Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana.

The male driver of a gray Ford Taurus, and suspected of drunk driving, was driving eastbound on Ventura when he crashed into six vehicles stopped at the intersection. He was allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed, the LAPD said.

An unidentified 60-year-old woman from Los Angeles, who was in the first car to be struck, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspected drunk driver, who is described to be in his 30s, went into a nearby convenience store, purchased a six pack of beer, and began drinking after the crash had occurred.

“He was loudly asking for the beer, ‘I need beer, beer,’” the clerk said in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.

“We’ve seen this happen in the past where somebody, because of the level of stress or whatever the situation is, they go out and consume some alcoholic beverages,” Det. Bill Bustos said in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.

Three other people suffered minor injuries. The suspect was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

The accident remains under investigation. No arrests have been made.

LAPD Accused of Mistreating Biker

Last week, in Marina del Rey, a man was irrationally abused by the Los Angeles Police Department, and is now searching for justice.

Brian Cisneros, 34, was riding his bike to work on Friday night when he was approached by two police officers. This occurred at Ida Avenue and Redwood Avenue.

According to Cisneros, the officers proceeded to attack him without warning and without reason. The lights immediately flashed and the cops pointed their guns at him. Cisneros was thrown to the ground, stomped on his face, choked out, and then tossed onto the police cruiser’s hood.

Cisneros explains that he never resisted the officers in any of their actions, and thought that he was going to die. In the end, he was cited for not having his lights on at night.

He went to the hospital and was treated for a dislocated shoulder, a fractured elbow, and other undisclosed injuries. From there he has filed a complaint against the LAPD.

Cisneros has a record and feels that that may be the reason for the unprovoked assault, but he has been “clean for ten years.”

The incident is under investigation. The two officers have logged the event as a traffic stop and did not make comments about anything further taking place.

It is unclear at this point how this accident will be handled, but it is appalling to think that police officers would attack a man solely for not turning on his lights.
